In October, the Museum of Photography in Charleroi will host the photographic collection of the A Foundation. This exhibition continues the series of shows devoted to corporate collections previously organized by the Museum, which have notably featured works from IDEA, the Janssen family collections, and Lhoist.
The collection of Astrid Ullens de Schooten Whettnall, brought together in the A Foundation, comprises around 5,500 photographs by about one hundred photographers, assembled over the past thirty years. These artists come from entirely different countries and backgrounds, addressing subjects as varied as social documentary, architecture, or life stories.
Following her own acquisition policy, Astrid Ullens has gathered complete photographic series. The exhibition Histoires en séries will be an opportunity to (re)discover, among others, Nicholas Nixon’s Brown Sisters, Hans-Peter Feldmann’s 100 Jahre, and Walker Evans’s Labor Anonymous .
Following on from the exhibition presented at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles in 2024 – Quand les images apprennent à parler – the Museum of Photography in Charleroi will showcase this remarkable collection. No fewer than 42 photographers of various nationalities will be brought together across all the Museum’s temporary exhibition spaces.
Visitors will be able to admire works by Diane Arbus, Mitch Epstein, Walker Evans, Graciela Iturbide, Helen Levitt, Nicholas Nixon, Ed Ruscha, Larry Sultan, Lee Friedlander, Adriana Lestido, Harry Callahan… displayed on the walls of the Museum of Photography.
