Make haste slowly, and be strong,
Begin your work anew twenty times,
Polish it again and again,
Sometimes add, but cut much more.

Make haste slowly! With this beautiful oxymoron, borrowed from Nicolas Boileau, this exhibition opens with work by eight young photographers who have recently graduated or are about to graduate with a master's degree in photography from the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (ArBA-EsA). The series of images presented today offer a rich overview of the diverse applications and approaches to photography as encouraged in our studio — an open creative space whose contours are redrawn each year by the personalities that shape it.

Make haste, then, for perseverance, stubbornness, and determination are needed to bring something into being; but please make haste slowly, for the stumbling, the deliberate steps backward, and the sideways movements are just as valuable as they are indispensable to your work. The insight into an artistic creation that is engaged with the world and conceived independently is an absolute necessity, a constant challenge. Make haste slowly, please! This call, offered with a wink, is addressed to all the young art photographers whose work we have had the great pleasure of guiding over the years at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
