Join us at LUCA School of Arts (Brussels) for an encounter with photographer Asako Narahashi (°1959). Based in Tokyo, Narahashi explores the relationship between water and land. By photographing primarily from within the water, she offers an unexpected and inverted perspective on the landscape. Her images, imbued with a sense of disorientation and instability, question notions of distance and balance. Narahashi will be in conversation with Marc Feustel, a specialist in Japanese photography.

Born in Tokyo in 1959, Asako Narahashi graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Waseda University. She began her career as a photographer after participating in a workshop led by Daido Moriyama and held her first solo exhibition, Dawn in Spring, in 1989. Throughout the 1990s, she worked primarily in black-and-white photography, notably on her NU-E series. Around 2001, she began her acclaimed series half awake and half asleep in the water, which offers a new perspective on landscape photography by incorporating the movement of water in the foreground. Continuing to explore water-based imagery, she has photographed extensively throughout Japan and abroad. Narahashi has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions around the world. Her works are held in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Huis Marseille Museum for Photography, among others. She has published nearly ten photobooks, including half awake and half asleep in the water (2007) and Ever After (2013).
